The American College of Radiology (ACR), the professional medical society dedicated to advancing radiology and enhancing patient care, and icometrix, the leading brain imaging AI developer, have entered into a strategic collaboration to improve the quality of care for people with Alzheimer’s disease. This collaboration aims to ensure the safe prescription of new FDA-approved treatments. This will be done by offering icometrix’ AI-based MRI quantification software to participating imaging facilities in the Alzheimer’s Network for Treatment and Diagnostics (ALZ-NET) and collaborating on several educational initiatives. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association® and managed and operated by the ACR, ALZ-NET is a voluntary health care provider-enrolled network collecting real-world clinical and imaging data from people evaluated for or treated with new FDA-approved Alzheimer’s therapies.
Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number that is expected to increase to more than 13 million by 2050 (Alzheimer’s Association, 2024). New FDA-approved treatments that have been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease are now available. However, these treatments require ongoing monitoring, including regular brain MRI scans, to support early diagnosis and to detect and manage potential side effects such as Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities (ARIA).
To assist radiologists with ARIA detection and severity grading, icometrix has developed the FDA-cleared icobrain aria solution. icobrain aria is the first and only AI software that automates the detection, quantification and grading of ARIA-E (edema/sulcal effusion) and ARIA-H (hemorrhage/superficial siderosis). Beyond identifying ARIA, icobrain aria calculates severity scores, empowering radiologists and neurologists to assess cases accurately and prescribe anti-amyloid treatments with confidence.
Through the collection of longitudinal, real-world data across a multi-site network, ALZ-NET aims to support evidence-based dementia diagnosis, treatment and quality care for people living with Alzheimer’s. To encourage standardized ARIA monitoring, participating ALZ-NET Imaging facilities will be offered discounted access to icometrix icobrain aria solution. In addition, these sites can use the new CPT® codes 0865T and 0866T for icobrain aria when billing for insurance reimbursement, which were issued by the AMA in 2024 based on the clinical evidence provided by icometrix.
“In partnership with the ALZ-NET leadership team, the American College of Radiology is committed to advancing the role of imaging in the diagnosis and management of Alzheimer’s disease. By supporting the integration of FDA-cleared AI-driven solutions into clinical practice, we are enhancing radiologists’ ability to detect and monitor ARIA with greater accuracy and consistency. This collaboration is an important step toward ensuring that patients receive safe, effective care as new Alzheimer’s treatments are introduced,” says Dr. Ana Franceschi, Director of Dementia Imaging at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and Chair of the ACR Neuroradiology Research Committee.
“We are entering a new era in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, marked by the approval and ongoing study of groundbreaking medications. As diagnostic and therapeutic options evolve, tools like icobrain aria from icometrix are playing a vital role in helping clinicians and dementia specialists track neuroimaging changes, optimize treatment response, and reduce potential complications. Collaborating with the American College of Radiology (ACR) will further expand access to this advanced offering, strengthening the bridge between clinical care and imaging innovation." says Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, Chief Medical Officer of DENT Neurologic Institute.
“Well validated AI solutions, such as icobrain aria, are crucial for the safe monitoring of Alzheimer’s patients on therapy. As most of my patients are scanned in several outside imaging centers, the use of icobrain helps me a lot with the standardized brain MRI interpretation and communication with the radiologists.” continues Dr. Salvatore Napoli, Medical Director at Neurology and Infusion Centers of New England, another ALZ-NET site.
Imaging facilities and/or clinicians that are interested in participating in ALZ-NET can learn more and begin their registration process on the ALZ-NET website (alz-net.org).
